Review: The Other Typist
The Other Typist by Suzanne RindellMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
The Other Typist is a fascinating literary work, told by an unreliable narrator who keeps the reader totally enthralled and guessing.
What determines who we are? Society, who says that women are the fairer sex? Those around us, who decide we are enemy, friend, or insignificant? Or ourselves –no matter how flawed and delusional our self-image may be?
Suzanne Rindell’s captivating and unique first novel, The Other Typist, examines these questions of truth and identity set against the backdrop of women’s lib and speakeasies in the roaring 20s.
Our narrator Rose Baker has a very clear picture of herself. She’s the good girl. The orphan raised by nuns, mousy-haired and plain, blending into the background, but set apart in her own mind by her virtue. Rose works as a stenographer in a police station, recording the crimes of those who are condemned to punishment.
But when a new woman joins the group, Rose finds herself drawn to Odalie’s mystery: Odalie is strong, and privileged, showing Rose a world of extravegant hotel suites and gorgeous clothes she never could have entered on her own. But how much does Rose owe her new compatriot? And where does she draw the line between the law and friendship?
Note: I received this ARC in a Goodreads giveaway, and this did not influence my review. THE OTHER TYPIST isn’t a book I would have picked up on my own, and I was thrilled by how much I wound up enjoying it. Highly recommended.

Review: The Big V by Lolita Lopez, from Ellora's Cave
The Big V by Lolita LopezMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
The Big V is a wickedly fun short tale about a virgin undergrad who discovers she's been cast as the maiden "sacrifice" for a group of fraternity guys.
What comes across at first as a scary gang bang situation turns out to be surprisingly sweet. Ashley's friend Chris is the one who recommended her as their ritual center, and the idea of being pleasured by a number of men is definitely appealing for her.
I loved the way Lolita Lopez mixed a fairly cliche fantasy with some real heart. The sex scenes are definitely sensual, but there's a wonderful mix of romance as well. To say more would be to give too much away -- but I suggest you check this one out, it's a lot of fun, even for those of us who aren't quite in the undergraduate demographic anymore.
