Brrr, I think we need a little heat this January! So I'm participating in the Snowbound Love Blog Hop and Giveaway this week.
Nancy Drew + Frank Hardy = True Love!
As a kid, I was a HUGE Nancy Drew fan. She was clever, spunky, and a redhead (like me--funny how important that is when you're little). I devoured her mysteries. I also read quite a few of the Hardy Boys books, and Frank Hardy was my first literary crush. He was clearly the more mature and intelligent brother (apparently at age 8, maturity was big on my checklist - only wish I'd kept that up later in life!) and he was even a photographer, so had a bit of an artistic soul. Seriously dreamy.

| Frank, Joe and Nancy -- aren't their snowsuits amazing? Love the 80s! |
And the best part? Frank and Nancy had an unresolved attraction...which was perfect, since I never understood the appeal of that Ned Nickerson guy. It culminated in one of my favourites of the series, book #5: THE LAST RESORT, which combined rock and roll *and* skiing (really, can anyone ask for more?).
At one point, Frank and Nancy are trapped in a ski cabin, surrounded by snow. There's no heat, so of course they have to cuddle up together in a sleeping bag to keep warm. What happens there is fairly PG (a forbidden kiss), but to my younger self it was The. Hottest. Thing. Ever.
Ever since then, I've been hooked on snowbound romance. Part of it is living in the snow belt in Southwestern Ontario, Canada -- I've been snowed in so many times, in enough strange places, that a burgeoning passion feels like something that could really happen. And I love the romance trope of the hero and heroine trapped together against their will, sometimes in a dangerous situation.
Here's a photo from my city's Snowmageddon last year:

Swordlily, Harry Potter is great too, of course...I read a lot of YA fiction as an adult, there are so many fantastic quality stories written for kids/young adults.

ReplyDeleteHi Lena,
ReplyDeleteFrank Hardy and Nancy Drew did make a nice couple. I think the first childhood book I can recall where I remember having a literary crush on was the children's version of the Scarlet Pimpernel. Of course, then I kept saying the Scarlet Pumpernickel because I liked pumpernickel bread so I was more familiar with that word. The baron was such a romantic figure to me. He rescued people who were sentenced to be executed including his wife. After him, I was drawn to figures like Zorro and Robin Hood. I suppose I still am drawn to these types of male figures. We need men like this, don't we?
Pumpernickel bread is delicious, Susan -- how have I never made that connection with the Scarlet Pimpernel before?
ReplyDeleteZorro was one of my biggest crushes as a preteen too! There was a Zorro series on TV in the early 90s starring Duncan Regehr. He won my heart completely.
As for Robin Hood, my favourite was Jennifer Roberson's Robin Hood from Lady of Sherwood. Great book. He was damaged, but oh-so-dreamy.
I was also a big Nancy Drew fan and read all of the books in the series. Thanks for the giveaway!

Thanks for stopping by, Bonnie!
ReplyDeleteI loved Nancy Drew and also the Bobbsey Twins. I never was drawn to Nancy's crush either. But Lord of the Rings was also a biggie to me. I read it while visiting my uncle in CA and he lived on the beach and I preferred to stay inside and read that book! (No, I don't know why I couldn't read it on the beach.)
ReplyDeletei loved the boxcar children series as a kid
